Criminal Justice students...
Feb. 2nd, 2005 07:24 pmI'm thinking of running some field trips over the semester, and we have a few options. We're looking at the following:
1) FBI headquarters in New York. I can pull a few strings and get a small group in for a tour of the coal face, including talking to a couple of old work buddies.
2) Criminal Court. Courts are generally open to the public, except in special cases, so this wouldn't take too much difficulty arranging. I warn you - it's not all Law & Order. Most cases are long and boring, but I can try and find a couple of juicy ones.
3) NYPD: Again with the string-pulling. Including a look at the cells, if things aren't too busy. Also includes talking to a couple of people about being a cop.
Also, if there's interest and I can swing it, I was thinking maybe a trip out to Quantico to talk to some of the forensic investigation types about what they do. That would take a lot of string pulling, though.
Oh, and Nathan, Haroun? I want to nab both of you for guest spots, given your perspectives on the whole law thing. Let me know when you're free?

Well, that went well...
Jan. 30th, 2005 07:30 amThanks, everyone, for making last night such a success. I think everyone enjoyed themselves - certainly most of the faces I saw were happy ones. Carlie and I are leaving at around lunchtime for Philly, and I'll be back sometime later tonight, given it's an eight-hour round trip. I just hope this weather holds.
Oh, and Carlie wants to leave a message, so I'm surrendering the keyboard for a bit:
***
Hey guys! I had a blast meeting you all, and I hope I didn't drive you all too crazy. Um, I'm hoping to come back again soonish, maybe sooner than later if Clarice finds her way to Penn U. okay. *grins* Mad has my email address for those of you I didn't give it to already, and Forge, we really have to sort out details and stuff for this HeliX business - I'll have those pamphlets and action plans and stuff I mentioned in the mail to you as soon as I get back. Jubes, love you heaps and look after yourself, all right? I'll see you before I go.
Farewell lunch before I go for whoever wants to join in? I'll be down in the kitchen at twelve - Mad says we need to be on the road by two at the latest.

Is there a particular reason why a robotic squid just flopped its way up the hall like some refugee from a Japanese Tentacle Porn Nightmare? Present from your friend? It's a long way from the calamari grounds...
And I'll be a bit slow in getting down to relieve you - I managed to walk into the middle of a water fight and I was honour-bound to join in. Good thing I have the super-soaker pistol my brother gave me as a joke one Christmas...
Oh, Scott? Friendly fire, my ass. Not even your laser sight is going to save you now.

Jan. 23rd, 2005 06:10 pmMy sister Carlie has Arrived.
I think what you saw of her during Adventures in Transcribing last night in Jubilee's journal gives you a good idea of what she's like. Don't hold that against her. *ducks well-aimed hairbrush*
Jubilee's also been moved from the medlab, and is in the spare room in my suite for the duration, since it's easier for everyone that way. Except the doctor who has to listen to the giggling at scary hours. I swear, sedatives all round tonight.
It's actually good to have her here - I'd forgotten how enthusiastic about everything she can be. Good for the jadedness.
Of course, she's insisting on going to the memorial tomorrow, so the trip in should be... entertaining. *grins*

Gone for the night
Jan. 20th, 2005 05:30 pmI'm off to Philly, spending the night with my folks, visiting my brother and his wife tomorrow, and then picking up Carlie from school and bringing her back here tomorrow evening. Hank's covering my classes tomorrow, so no free day guys, unfortunately.
I think I'll also be going on Monday. Carlie will want to, no doubt, since she's heavily into the mutant rights group at her college, and I'll want to keep an eye on things. So if another driver's needed, I'm there.

And we're back!
Jan. 9th, 2005 07:17 pmA bit of delay on account of weather, but we're back, finally. And yes, I have various little souvenier things for certain people, including you, Hank, so stop making the puppy eyes at me. *grins*
Damn, classes coming up. Good thing I had time to work on lesson plans on the plane. I'm actually branching out into the scary world of Humanities this semester and using the FBI stuff - I'm running a criminal justice course. Not law specifically, more criminal behaviour in a social, political and legal setting. Although Nathan? He with the law degree? I wouldn't be adverse to a guest lecture or two, given your unique perspective. ;)

It's early.
Jan. 7th, 2005 05:00 amVery early, in fact. And I'm awake, having _not_ worked through the night before. *yawns* All in a good cause - Jubilee and I have a plane to catch for San Francisco in a few hours. We'll only be gone a couple of days, try not to miss us too much?
Now to wake up one Jubilation Lee. Where's that water pistol...

Chocolate! Chocolate chocolate chocolate!
Jan. 2nd, 2005 12:34 pmI have decided that Hank is a wonderful-wonderful man who I may jus tmarry because he brought me the most divine chocolate as a peace offering and there's lots of it and I've eaten way too much. But right now? I really don't care. Because I have chocolate and it's yummy and you're all far too quiet and I think I shall be obnoxiously cheerful at as many people as I can. Any volunteers?
So there.

Happy New Year. :)
Jan. 1st, 2005 08:39 amMy first post of the New Year. :) I hope everyone had a good time last night, both here and over in Scotland. Things were a little on the quiet side for me, but after the last few months, that wasn't a bad thing at all. And Cain's good company.
Off to do the rounds now, and then a spot of breakfast I think. Anyone care to join me? I'm feeling in the cooking mood.

I'm back! Ahahaha! No donut shall be safe!
Why yes, it was rather a long drive with hellish traffic, why do you ask? Although the Monty Python CD my brother Joe gave me probably hasn't helped with the perception of a nice, stable mood.
My family all say hi, and wish everyone a happy holiday. Jubilee, I have gifts here for you from all the Bartlets. Kurt, Alison, Haroun, there's some stuff amongst the metric ton in the back of my car - thank goodness I didn't bring Carmen is all I can say. There's also something for Moira and Hank that looks suspiciously baby-related, but that can wait until they get back.
And Lorna? Recipes. Mom's cookies, plus the pumpkin pie and the Ultra Secret Stuffing Mix, which has been handed down by at least three generations of her family. And a proposal of marriage from Dad after that cheesecake.

Dec. 23rd, 2004 02:15 pmWarm clothes? Check. Snow scraper? Check. Thermos of extra-strong hot coffee? Double check. SUV with the heavy-duty snow tires? Check. Christmas presents for the family? Check. Bunneh? Check.
Yep, I'm about to head home, in this snow. 'Ro, do a poor doctor a favour and have a word with those nasty snow clouds on the horizon? I'd be much happier if I knew I wasn't about to drive home in a blizzard.
I'll call Hank when I get in, let him know I arrived in one piece. Have a good Christmas, all of you.

Holiday plans
Dec. 19th, 2004 12:31 amYes, I have some.
I'm planning on driving down to Philly and my parents' place on the 23rd, possibly with a couple of extras unless they have better offers. *grins* Jubilee, if you don't end up coming with me (there's rumours of Sean throwing open Cassidy Keep, and I know you and Terry are friends), I can take Georgina back with me to look after - we can't have the bunneh left all alone, can we? I know Carlie will be thrilled to look after her for you.
I should be back by the 28th, so I can take over running the medlab whilst Hank gets some time off (I think there were mutterings about skiing, the scary man), and I'll probably be celebrating New Year's with Cain and whoever else is still here. *eg* I can put a silly hat on him and he can't stop me, bwahahaha!
*ahem* Possibly one cup of coffee too many.
Oh, and Pete? Sorry to dump that job on you. I owe you one next time there's a staff night at Harry's. Possibly more than one.

Another day, another night on duty. I think I'm actually getting used to these, though. And Boiler Beach definitely helps - nothing like a dose of light and warmth to stave off the weirdnees caused by living nocturnally. Actually, Boiler Beach is responsible for a few things; I'm seriously considering a study into energy-based mutations and the possible need for a natural power source, such as sunlight, and the subsequent changes in physiology. Like Scott's optic blasts - they obviously need sunlight as a power source, and considering the change in his mood lately, I'm wondering if his mutation demands he get more sunlight than most. If he doesn't, there's depression and badness. Something to consider...
At some point I have to do my Christmas shopping. I've got some of it done, thanks to the joys of online shopping, but there's still a few more things I have to pick up. If anyone needs a lift to the mall for the same reason, I'm willing to take the van. Leaving around 11, so we avoid the worst of the after-work crowds...
Jubilee is snoring on my couch. It's very amusing.

Don't wait up
Dec. 13th, 2004 08:56 pmI'm off tonight doing a favour for a friend, a very big favour. *looks at outfit* An ENORMOUS favour. But yes, don't expect me back at any kind of reasonable hour, or to be awake when I do. Moira, lab's all yours - Hank was threatening mayhem if he didn't get to sleep when it was actually dark. Be good, now. *grins*

Nice news to wake up to...
Dec. 11th, 2004 08:39 amMoira? I just got a fax from the accountant, the one we have for the Foundation? Apparently someone got generous and donated close on $500,000 to the account. Anonymously.
I'm stunned, I really am. It's not like we've had the chance to do more than set up the accounts and such - certainly nothing close to actual advertising our existance. Still, I'm not about to argue with our mysterious benefactor...

Prescription for you all
Dec. 10th, 2004 11:16 amGet thee downstairs to Boiler Beach, get a bit of light and heat for at least half an hour. Seriously, you'll feel much better.
Actually, in some parts of Siberia they use something similar in the dead of winter to avoid Seasonal Affective Disorder - the winter blues. In places where it's dark 24/7 all winter, it's quite an issue. Of course, the Siberian version doesn't involve the sand and wading pools and the atmospherics, but their loss, I say.
And Jamie? This might sound weird, but I could have sworn you're in one of those movies you've got on loop down there. Doing something scary to a fugsicle.
I need a TA. Who else could Ibully cajole into being my cabana boy person and rub sunscreen on my back?

It's so quiet...
Dec. 8th, 2004 08:02 amI know there's lots more students left here, but with so many of the louder ones gone, the place seems so peaceful. Useful, though, since I have finals to prepare and papers to mark - I've gotten sadly behind in my preparation with all the medlab stuff lately. My students shouldn't take it as a sign I'll be taking things easy with the final - the Anatomy one is going to be testing, to say the least. The Health and Well-Being students won't be finding things a walk in the park either, but rest assured, I'm going to be tough but fair. And I'll be around for questions if you have them - either in my office down in medlab, or in my suite. Yes, marking. I have the last set of quizzes only half-done.
